We would like to thank everyone who visited, worked on and volunteered their time on the mobile hub which has been operating across South West Birmingham this year. With the funding ending, this service will not be operating after 1 September 2023. Shencare AGM will be held this year on Thursday 12th October 2023 at Weoley Castle Community Church. 13.30.
Who would have thought in March this year that the next 6 months would change how the Community and Community Transport in particular would need to operate for the foreseeable future. Our thoughts and prayers are with all of our clients and their carers who have suffered illness and loss during this ongoing crisis. We at Shencare are doing our best to be here for all of our service users and we are pleased that some community groups are starting to organise returns to activities. It is fair to say that, without the Government’s Furlough Scheme, we would not have the resouces that we have been able to retain. To those members of the driving force that have left us we say a heartfelt”thank you” for the time that you have helped our vulnerable clients to access their services and, therefore, minimise their social exclusion and that of their carers. We believe that we are at the heart of the local community and never before has the maxim ” use it or lose it” been more appropriate. We look forward to hearing from groups and individuals who would benefit from our help.
Shencare is delighted to announce that we have been successful in our application to the Department for Transport’s Community Transport Minibus Fund. The Government has set aside £24 million to provide Community Transport operators with a new minibus in Round one of this funding. A stringent application process has been held to ensure that the fund will benefit the local community that we serve. The RT. HON. Patrick McLoughlin, Secretary of State for Transport said ” These providers lie at the heart of the communities that they serve – getting people to hospitals, towns and shops and supporting groups like Guides and Scouts. They are particularly important in rural and isolated areas, helping people to get around and participate in local life.” We have taken delivery of our new wheelchair accessible Mercedes Sprinter that has been fully adapted for our clients needs. Initial reaction from our service users and drivers has been extremely positive.
We are delighted to announce that we have achieved the Pqasso Quality Mark at Level 1. This quality standard is the recognised quality mark for the Third Sector and has been achieved following a total review of the charity’s policies and procedures. Shencare has been assessed using a quality system endorsed by the Charity Commission. Trustees are pleased to record their appreciation of the very hard work done by staff and volunteers in gaining this prestigious award. Clients will have confidence in being part of a professional organisation.
Community groups in South West Birmingham now have more opportunities to get out and about, thanks to a new community bus provided by Shencare. Shencare, who have been providing wheelchair accessible passenger transport to groups and individuals in South-West Birmingham for almost 30 years, will provide local people’s access to fresh food, leisure facilities – including swimming and Tai Chi – socializing networks and healthy living education. This service will continue the pilot project that has now ended following our partnership with Centro and their Social Inclusion Fund ‘Community Insiders’ project. Shencare C.E.O. Chris Busst said: “We are very pleased to announce the continuation of this project that will make it possible for more people living within the south-west of Birmingham to live healthier, happier lives.” He added: “We are now seeking to consult with further potential user groups in the area who feel that they would benefit from the facility of accessible minibuses.” Anyone interested in finding out more about the project or booking the minibus should contact Chris Busst, Chief Executive Officer, or Geoff Pell, Operations Co-ordinator, on 0121 476 1816 or by e-mail on [shencare_email].
Shencare is delighted to announce the success of its application to Centro for funding support to its initiative in operating the Shencare model, in the north of the city. This successful application was made in partnership with Age UK Birmingham and is designed to provide accessible transport facilities to people who find existing provision unsuitable. If you or anyone you know would like further information about the scheme, please contact us via the contact page.
On November 21 2008, Shencare received an award presented by the Deputy Lord Mayor, Councillor Randall Brew, on behalf of Community Network South West. The award was for: “Most enterprising / income generating project, in recognition of the positive and sustainable impact on the local community and the project’s recipients.” This award was made following Shencare’s active participation in assisting people retrain for work as a consequence of the Longbridge car plant closure and, at the same time, see its community base grow with additional community groups and individuals benefiting from the increased accessible transport provision.
